The positive and negative electrode materials of the battery usually need to be evenly coated on the electrode substrate (such as copper foil and aluminum foil) by the coater. Since lithium batteries have very high requirements for the thickness and uniformity of electrode materials, roll-to-roll coaters can ensure the consistency and stability of the coating.

2. Thin-film solar cells

Roll-to-roll coaters are also widely used in the production of thin-film solar cells, especially when coating the photoelectric active layer (such as CIGS, Perovskite, etc.). The production process of thin-film solar cells requires uniform coating of materials to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency, and roll-to-roll coaters can provide high-precision coating control.

3. Flexible electronic products

In the field of flexible electronics, roll-to-roll coaters can be used to coat conductive materials, insulating materials, and functional films, etc., which are suitable for the production of wearable devices, flexible displays, electronic tags and other products. Flexible electronic products require the coating layer to have good adhesion, uniformity and flexibility, and roll-to-roll coaters can meet these requirements.

4. Photoelectric functional film

Roll-to-roll coating machines are widely used in the production of photoelectric functional films, especially in the production of display devices such as LCD, OLED, touch screens, photovoltaic panels, etc. Uniform and precise coating of functional films is essential to improve the performance of photoelectric devices.

5. Packaging materials

Roll-to-roll coating machines are also important in the production of high-performance packaging materials, especially when coating functional films. Functional coatings can enhance the durability, UV resistance, air tightness, barrier properties and other properties of packaging materials, and are widely used in the packaging of food, medicine, electronic products, etc.

6. Electrochromic film (EC film)

Electrochromic film (EC film) is a material that can change color according to external voltage changes. It is widely used in smart windows, car rearview mirrors, display screens, etc. Roll-to-roll coating machines can evenly coat EC materials on glass substrates or plastic substrates.

7. Sensors and detection equipment

Roll-to-roll coating machines can also be used to produce film materials for various sensors and detection equipment. Sensors usually require conductive films with high sensitivity, and the coating process requires uniform coating and strong adhesion.

8. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)

Roll-to-roll coaters are also used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards (PCBs), especially when producing flexible circuit boards. Coating machines can be used to apply conductive materials, dielectric layers, protective coatings, etc.

9. Conductive and Insulating Coatings

Roll-to-roll coaters are also used to apply films that are conductive or insulating. These coatings are widely used in batteries, sensors, electronic devices, and other fields.

10. Automotive Coatings

Roll-to-roll coaters can also be used in the automotive industry, especially when producing coating materials such as automotive window films, interior films, and thermal insulation films. These coatings not only require good adhesion and durability, but also need to meet environmental and safety requirements.

Application Case (Preparation of electrode and solid electrolyte membrane)

Roll-to-Roll (R2R) coaters play a vital role in battery manufacturing, especially in the preparation of lithium battery electrodes and solid electrolyte membranes. Through a continuous coating process, it can efficiently and accurately coat the slurry onto the substrate to meet the quality and output requirements of battery components. The following are typical steps for preparing electrodes and solid electrolyte membranes using a roll-to-roll coater:

1. Preparation of electrode materials

Electrode materials are usually slurries mixed with active materials (such as positive or negative electrode materials), conductive additives (such as carbon black) and binders (such as polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE or polyacrylic acid PAA). Its preparation process generally includes the following steps:

Step 1: Preparation of electrode slurry

Raw material selection: Select appropriate positive electrode (such as LiCoO₂, LiFePO₄, etc.) or negative electrode materials (such as graphite, silicon, etc.), as well as conductive agents (such as carbon black) and binders.

Slurry mixing: Add active materials, conductive agents and binders to the solvent, mix them evenly by stirring, ultrasonic treatment, etc. to make slurry. The viscosity of the slurry should be adjusted according to the coating requirements.

Step 2: Slurry filtration

In order to ensure the coating quality, the prepared slurry needs to be filtered to remove undissolved particles and impurities to ensure the uniformity and fluidity of the slurry.

Step 3: Coating

Coating method: The electrode slurry is coated on the electrode substrate (such as copper foil, aluminum foil) through a roll-to-roll coater. Common coating methods include knife coating, roller coating, etc.

Coating thickness control: The thickness of the coating is controlled by adjusting the speed of the coater, the blade height and other parameters. The coating thickness of the electrode usually ranges from a few microns to tens of microns.

Step 4: Drying

Drying: The electrode material after coating usually needs to go through a drying process to remove the solvent. The drying temperature and time need to be optimized according to the composition of the slurry to prevent cracks or uneven drying of the slurry.

Equipment: The roll-to-roll coater is usually equipped with online drying equipment, such as infrared drying, hot air drying, etc., to ensure that the film layer after coating is evenly dried.

Step 5: Cooling and Winding

After drying, the electrode film usually needs to be cooled to room temperature and then wound into a roll by the winding device of the roll-to-roll machine.

2. Preparation of solid electrolyte membrane

The preparation of solid electrolyte membrane requires high precision and stability, especially for applications such as lithium batteries and sodium batteries. Solid electrolytes, as key components, must have good ionic conductivity, stability and mechanical properties. The preparation steps include:

Step 1: Preparation of solid electrolyte powder

Material selection: Common solid electrolyte materials include lithium electrolytes (such as LiPON, Li₃PS₄, etc.) or polymer electrolytes (such as PEO-based electrolytes, PVDF-based electrolytes, etc.).

Material synthesis: Electrolyte materials are synthesized by solid phase method, solution method, sol-gel method and other methods. Solid electrolytes are usually prepared in powder form.

Step 2: Preparation of electrolyte slurry

Mix the solid electrolyte powder with a solvent and a binder to prepare a slurry. For polymer electrolytes, it may also be necessary to add an appropriate plasticizer to improve ionic conductivity.

Slurry stability: The viscosity control of solid electrolyte slurry is crucial. Too high or too low viscosity will affect the coating effect.

Step 3: Coating

Coating method: The coating of solid electrolyte membrane usually adopts knife coating, roller coating and other methods to ensure the uniformity of coating.

Coating thickness control: The thickness of solid electrolyte membrane is generally 10-100 microns, which is adjusted according to the needs of the battery. The speed and blade height of the coater need to be precisely adjusted to ensure the uniformity of the membrane layer.

Step 4: Drying and curing

Drying: The solid electrolyte membrane needs to be dried to remove the solvent. For polymer electrolyte membrane, it may also need to undergo heat treatment or curing process to improve its mechanical properties and stability.

Heating process: In some cases, appropriate heat treatment is required in the oven to enhance the mechanical strength and conductive properties of the membrane.

Step 5: Cooling and winding

After the dried solid electrolyte membrane is cooled, it is wound by the winding device of the roll-to-roll coater to form a finished roll. This process needs to ensure the integrity of the membrane to avoid wrinkles, breakage and other problems.

3. Quality control

Quality control is crucial in the preparation of electrodes and solid electrolyte membranes. Common quality inspection methods include:

Film thickness inspection: Use a laser thickness gauge or coating thickness gauge for inspection.

Uniformity inspection: Use equipment such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) to check the surface and cross section of the coating membrane to ensure that the membrane layer is uniform and defect-free.

Conductivity inspection: For solid electrolyte membranes, it is also necessary to test their ionic conductivity to ensure that they meet the requirements of battery applications.

Strength and flexibility inspection: Solid electrolyte membranes must have good mechanical strength and flexibility to adapt to the working environment of the battery.
